Lake Koshkonong Wetland Association:

Program Notes from 1/21/06 Meeting

Newville DNR Station, 10:00 am

We enjoyed our annual wood duck box assembly program on a beautiful morning after a fresh snowfall. Sixteen persons participated including two enthusiastic young people. We assembled 50 wood duck nest boxes and 6 mallard nest platforms. Cedar lumber for the wood duck boxes was donated by Nelson-Young and had been pre-cut by Bill Bendig. The mallard platforms were made of rolled wire stuffed with coconut fiber and mounted on a steel brace. Any mallard would love this home!

When we got hungry, we enjoyed brats prepared by head chef Persson and brownies and cookies provided by dessert chefs Yates and Shackelford.

Some of these boxes will find a place on Lake Koshkonong but others will house happy ducks throughout Wisconsin.

Our next meeting is February 28 at 6:00 pm at the DNR office in Janesville. The program will be a presentation on Prairie Planting by Ron Martin of Midwest Prairies. Prairie plantings on uplands adjacent to the lake provide nesting habitat for Blue-winged teal, Bob-o-links and Meadowlarks. Prairies also are home to many small mammals and insects. The grasses and flowers of prairies are very beautiful, and their deep roots prevent erosion and adverse run-off into the lake. Come and learn more!

Respectfully submitted,
Penny Shackelford
