Program Notes from the Feb 2, 2008 Meeting of LKWA

February 2, 2008 at 10:00 am

Newville DNR Station

We enjoyed our annual nest box assembly program on a snowy February morning. This winter it seems as though every morning is a snowy morning!

Bill Bendig pre-cut 90 boxes for Wood Ducks. He also constructed sturdy wooden platforms for Mallard nest rolls. Our volunteers assembled the Mallard rolls made of coir mats (coconut fiber) rolled into wire mesh fencing.

Twenty-one persons participated including three enthusiastic young people. We assembled 30 Wood Duck boxes and 15 Mallard nest platforms. Nelson-Young donated cedar lumber for the nest boxes. The coir matting and steel poles for mounting nest structures were also donated.

When we got hungry, we enjoyed brats prepared by head chef Persson and brownies and candy provided by dessert chefs Babcock, Buggs and Shackelford.

Our next meeting is February 26 at 6:00 pm at the Milton Township Hall in Milton (23 First St). The program will be "Strategic Planning for Wisconsin's Wetlands" presented by Becky Abel, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Wetlands Association. Please come and learn how we can help work to safeguard Wisconsin’s wetlands now and into the future.

Respectfully submitted,

Penny Shackelford, Secretary-Treasurer
